Frequently Asked Questions

Questions? If you have a question we haven't covered, why not contact us:-

Do you offer day hire?
No, Our minimum rental is 3 nights, although you can bring the canalboat back earlier if you wish.

Do I need a license to operate a canalboat?
No, you will not need a license and you will be given all the training you need to get started.

Is the boat difficult to operate?
No. The waters are mostly current free and cruising speed is only three to four miles per hour making operating a canalboat child's play.

Are there any hidden costs?
Mooring is free along the towpath although if you choose to stay in a marina overnight there may be a charge and British Waterways charge £5 for an overnight stay in Llangollen. Water is free and we give you a British Waterways key on arrival. Gas and pump-outs (if necessary) are included in the price you pay. We ask that you arrive at on your arrival day in order to provide sufficient time to check-in, load the boat and receive the training and tour. The full cost of the holiday including optional extras are shown on the booking form.

Is there car parking?
Free car parking is available at all locations. Many of our marinas are also close to main line railway stations.

Does the boat have electricity?
Many of the boat have 240v (UK Mains) sockets which accept 3 pin plugs. Electricity is produced from the engine by storing it in batteries. An inverter then converts the 12v to 240v electricity. If you decided to moor in a marina during your trip, we also provide a lead so that you can plug the boat into the marina supply. Please check the information for the boat you are interested in.

Do I need insurance?
The canalboat and contents are fully insured. The only thing that is not insured by us are (a) your car which is probably protected under your motor policy and (b) your personal possessions which are also probably covered under your house contents insurance but please check your own policies carefully.

Is it easy to navigate?
Our welcome folder is full of information and good advice as well as a canal map, which will show you where to find bridges, water-points, villages and those essential canalside pubs!

What happens if we have a problem?
Our dedicated team are on hand twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies. Your safety and enjoyment are our paramount concern.

Can I take bicycles on the boat?
You are able to take bicycles to all our marinas except Goytre Wharf (due to low bridges). If you do take bicycles you need to bring some matting/old carpet to protect the roof from scratches and be aware of low bridges etc.

Where can we go on the canals?
The rules of the canal are simple and few. You can go anywhere on the canals and our experts at the marinas will take you through the maps and advise you of the options. You can stop nearly anywhere- prohibited moorings will have clear signs, just make sure you don't moor (park) on sharp bends or very close to bridges and locks. The only other rule is to cruise on the right of the canal and slow down as you pass other boats.

Does someone come with us?
No, the canalboat is all yours for the duration of your holiday. We train you when you arrive so that you are confident you can handle the boat. We can advise you of good routes to take and what to expect. Then you'll cruise away to explore the canals at your own pace.
